Bills Lake 1
I think that along with most of the other lakes in the region, we suffered with the weather most of 2003.

The early part of spring was glorious and the fishing was great. Late spring and the weather just kept getting better. By summer the weather was so hot it was memorable, but not for the right reasons. The fishing suffered, as did the anglers. Average temperatures were well in the 30's and at night it never seemed to cool off below 20.c. the water temperature remained at a steady 28.c. and the fish were nearly poached.

The catch rate was well down on the previous year but never the less a few really good captures were made. These were during periods of weather where it was "just right". By the end of the season we saw over 40 captures of carp over the 40lbs barrier with so many 30's we lost count. One group in September landed a tonne of carp in the week. Still the big residents are evading capture but we'll have to see what 2004 brings?

During the winter we have given the swims a huge facelift. All of the steep sided swims are now terraced so anglers are never far away from their rods. No perilous journeys down the banks to hit a run. The three swims on the railway bank are now fully refurbished and the Tree-tops swim now has pontoons and "improved" steps.

Also we have a new clubhouse in the style of a Swiss chalet. This is the new reception and dining area. Finally we have somewhere to have a cup of tea indoors!

The stocking over the winter has also been a real problem. Due to the very hot weather the fish farmers haven't had the expected growth rates they usually have. This has resulted in "big" fish being very difficult to find. The prices have increased along with the temperature I think?
We managed to obtain several very good fish to add to the lakes. The carp added in the main lake went to 38lbs, Sturgeon to 15lbs, along with 5 Catfish to 90lbs +. These should give the anglers a giggle when caught!

The small lake, Bill's Lake 2, has had more quality carp added and Catfish to 60lbs +. This exclusive lake is nearly fully booked for 2004 with just a few weeks still available for hire.
Our new web site is proving to be a real hit (many thanks to project 30) as are the new brochures. All these can be seen at www.billslake.com for those interested.

Finally I would like to wish all our friends and clients, old and new, a very prosperous New Year. Tight lines and wet nets to you all !

Bill Moore.
